Decorating Trends for 2013

Every year the designers come up with new ideas, new colors and new trends for the season. So much of what they see is influenced by our contemporary lifestyles it can be a job in itself to keep up. No sooner is one thing in, then it’s on its way out. The trick is to look at your furniture like your wardrobe; buy a few really good pieces that you can accessorize in a simple and inexpensive way to always seem as if you are on the cutting edge of fashion and style, and you will be!

Look for more use of natural elements in furniture design such as bamboo, woven baskets, shells and especially mother of pearl components and less in the way of plastics manufactured materials.

How to Decorate with a Neutral Palette

There is a TV show called, FYH (For Your Home) on the Create network that I love to watch for the latest trends and newest innovations in interior decorating.  A mother and daughter team of interior designers work with architects and builders to create high end,  model homes for potential buyers. This week, the show was all about using a neutral palette to bring together  a large, open plan space that was truly spectacular.  Using neutral colors like pale greys, taupes, ivories and off whites can really give your home an elegant yet warm atmosphere. If you look at Treasurecombers.net home page, you will see three wonderful examples of how a neutral palette can be the sophisticated, charming backdrop for an interior design plan that works in any room.

Here are some fine examples of neutral colored chairs that will soften the look of a living room , dining room or bedroom.

Light colored fabric contrasted with dark wood throughout the room creates a sense of balance and rhythm. Look for light colored rugs and drapes to complete the look.

Beautiful off-white is sheer style. Once again we see the dark wood as an accent color.Try to pick up and match the color of any other wood in the room such as ceiling beam, flooring  or window casements.

Creating Beauty Through Symmetry With Buffet Lamps

While we are all recovering from our winter holidays, the days are still rather short and lighting our homes in the early winter evenings creates an atmosphere of home and hearth. I love the glow of soft lights streaming through the windows of home at dusk as I walk up the path to my front door. Happy New Year 2013! Our New Year’s Resolution? Out With the Old, In With The New!

One of my favorite moments of the New Year is getting the chance to look around my home and decide which pieces of furniture have become worn out  and what needs replacing. The rule of thumb to live by is if you don’t love it, get rid of it, or give it away to someone who may absolutely adore the piece you are tired of.

This is a lot harder to do than it sounds, but if you want to maintain the home of your dreams, start this yearly ritual as soon as you move into a new home. Your efforts will pay off handsomely. Sometimes we are torn between “liking” a piece and truly “loving” a piece. Toss it immediately if the answer isn’t a resounding “I just love this piece and cannot live without it!”
